The thriving village of Peasedown St John can trace its history back to the early Iron Age and there is good evidence of Roman and Saxon settlements on the site. Situated just 5 miles or so from the beautiful Georgian City of Bath (with its renowned architecture and Roman Baths), most of the modern development in the village and surrounding villages and hamlets began in the 19th Century. The increased demand for coal caused by the Industrial Revolution led to the sinking of Peasedown’s own colliery in 1845 and soon there were at least six collieries within a radius of a few kilometres of the village.
With the closure of the coal mines in the 1950's and the increased popularity of suburban living, Peasedown rapidly became a commuter village for Bath and Bristol and that trend has continued to the present day. A development of very nearly 1000 new homes (now completed) commenced in the early 1990's on the southern outskirts of the village and, more recently, a new commercial park has opened with prestigious car show rooms and a state-of-the-art-hospital(Circle Bath designed by world-famous architects – Foster & Partners).
